I'm BAAAACK.

Okay.. Two months since I posted..

Another case of too little time.. I haven't stopped drawing- just haven't had loads of time to scan.

Well to start things off: here's a pinup I did for James Mason, creator of Urban Shogun..

Snake Eyes and Helix

I bought an issue of IDW's GiJoe a while back, and the leading characters in that issue were Snake Eyes and Helix( the woman). I did a quick sketch of a composition I liked and then went forward for the final image.

It took me several passes and reworking the composition to get something I liked.
I have to thank Bernard Shepard for taking on the inks( especially since my pencils were heavy, complex and sometimes not totally plannd out) He did a great job- you can check out more of his work over at StudioRevolver.com.

After the inks were finished I also struggled with the colors as well, but in the last leg everything came together.

Inception Comic Cover contest over at Deviant Art

DA recently had an inception inspire contest.. They provided a script that explained the run up to the Inception movie.. Basically the end scene of the script is the beginning of the movie- it details how they figured out how to get into Saito's head.

I had to pretty much do the whole thing in around 5 hours, so I didn't have time to make things really pretty, buyt I like the overall composition.

Do me a favor and click on this link to DA, and help me bump up my view count for this..

Thanks,

riq.

Poison Ivy

This Poison Ivy was done fairly quickly as a last shot to get a new print ready for Heroes Con.. I liked how it come out.. but I can also see some areas that could be done better.

But in the end, I found a nice organic process when I did this one.. I'd like to do some more pics of other characters in this style..

BTW, I have prints left.. Drop me a line at my email if you're interested.

Storyboard Project

Here are a few frame from some recent advertising work.. But these board were for only use for a presentation that in the end was animated using flash( this part was not done be me.)

I haven't done storyboards for quite a while, and previously markers were my medium of choice.. It didn't seem right to do these with markers, so I figured out a way to emulate my marker technique on computer.. It worked fairly well for me, but it definitely wasn't as fast.

But I did get more efficient towards the end.. And I think this will be the way I'll do them from now on.

Final Cover

I put a lot of sweat and tears into this final cover.. I kept tweaking it to get the right "polish" or feel that I wanted.. I finally figured that I needed the backlighting to be ver strong and almost flat..

One of my issues when I paint is not having enough value difference between my shadow areas and light areas.. I battled with the idea of which light source was stronger, the blue one coming from the box or the yellow one coming from the over head lights.

I finally realize that the back light had to win out, and I think the picture finally came together from therer.

It interesting how when you render "honestly" you sometimes get results you aren't totally happy with, but you know is right. I wanted the girls face to look much "cuter", but when I rendered the lighting correctly/honestly( as best as I knew how) It looked right, but the "cute" wasn't there as much as I wanted.

But I'm happy with the forms I created and I feel that they create some good forms on the characters.

that's it.

Oldies but Goodies

Some older pics that I've never really show before. Many of these are commercial illustration jobs, not comic related. Some environment renderings, some stuff for ad agencies, some stuff done for fun.

Cyborg- DC card art

I can finally add this piece that I did quite a few months ago. My studio mate Tom Feiser hooked me up with this. They needed the image ASAP, and I knocked out this baby overnight. I did the whole shebang: pencils, inks and colors.
